Professor Gooseberry's I Can Read Club Series
- Windows Version
Thank you for your purchase of your new I Can Read Club title.
Please read the following information so that you can get maximum
enjoyment out of your I Can Read Club title.
Where to Put Things
The installer will prompt you to enter a directory name. We would
suggest that you accept the default and create a master "READCLUB"
directory on your hard drive in which you can place all of your I Can
Read Club titles. The installer for each title will create a directory
within the master directory for that title's data (named "WWA",
"BFT", etc. ). You will find each title's application in the the title's
directory. Don't move the application, or errors could result. Be sure
that the title's CD-ROM is in the drive and mounted each time you
run the application.
Memory
You should have at least 4MB of RAM in your system for suitable
performance. If you have less RAM, or you're running other
applications on a minimum system, you may find that each screen
takes a very long time to load.
Sound Buffer
The installer, SETUP.EXE, installs an INI file in your Windows
directory for each title that you install. This INI file contains a line
that initializes the sound buffer in Windows. Its initial value is 250K.
If you have a very slow CD-ROM drive, you might need to set a
higher value for this buffer if you experience sounds breaking up.
Any memory given to the sound buffer is taken away from the
application, so don't allocate more than you need.
System Software
Windows 3.1 or later is required to run this software.
Color
Your Windows system must have at least an 8-bit color card (256
colors) to use this title. The installation software will detect any
deficiencies and issue a warning. If your video driver is set to more
than 256 colors, you could experience certain images being rendered
in the wrong colors or performance degrading severely. For optimal
performance, set your video driver to 256 colors.
User Files
Each user who logs in to the program is given a user file in which
information is stored tracking progress through the four modes, and
each word clicked on in Mode 4 ("You Read"). The user files are
simple text files (called USERxxxx, where xxxx is user #), stored in
the title's directory. In the management section of the software
(accessed by hitting Ctrl-A), the second line on the screen calls out
the name of the user file for each user that you enter. To print the
user's data, you can open the user file using Notepad or some other
text editor and print from there. Be careful not to modify the file in
any way, or you could produce a "corrupted user file" error. If this
happens, just delete the file, and a new one will be created
automatically the next time that user logs in.
The Four Modes
Mode 3 ("Think About the Story") progress is indicated by a string of
text such as "10-12:1". The "10-12" refers to the book spread on
which the exercise is based, and the ":1" indicates which exercise on
that spread. Each time you enter the program under a given name,
the software will determine where you left off in Mode 3 and
restore you to the next exercise. You can reset any user's progress
settings in the management screen. As the user completes each
mode, the banner over that mode's billboard in the Main Menu will
turn into the "Golden Goose". While the software doesn't absolutely
require the student to do each mode in order, the reading specialists
who designed this software designed the four modes to build skills in
a sequence, and we would strongly recommend "staying with the
program". Please note that once you complete the "Think About the Story"
exercises, the software will not let you restart the exercises unless
the activity has been reset in the management screen, or the student
logs on as a different user. This is to prevent inadvertent loss of
a student's progress.
We hope you enjoy your I Can Read Club purchase. All of the titles in
the Professor Gooseberry series offer a unique combination of
entertainment and professional educational techniques. For
